UNIT - I : Nature of Scientific Inquiry Relationship between Theory and Research and the Research Problem : Nature of Scientific Inquiry, Nature of Science Steps of Scientific Method : Perception of a Problem Formulation of Hypothesis Collection of evidence Testing Hypothesis Arriving at generalization Relationship between Theory and Research : Definition and Characteristics of a scientific theory Nature of Scientific research Basic and applied research Relationship between theory and research The Research Problem Sensitivity to a research problem Identifying, selecting and defining a research problem Areas of educational research Use of reference material and library survey.
UNIT - II : Methods of Educational Research, Tools and Techniques of Data Collection and Sampling : Methods of Educational Research Historical Method Survey Method Case Study Method Experimental and quasi Experimental Studies Developmental Method (including Genetic Method) Action Research Tools and Techniques of Data Collection - Construction and use of the following tools and techniques of data collection : Questionnaire, Check, List, Different types of scales - Rating Scales; Attitude Scales; Interview; Observation; Socio-metric Devices Item Analysis, Reliability and Validity of tools Sampling : Importance of sampling Units of Sampling Methods of selecting sample : Random Sampling, Stratified Sampling, Purposive Sampling, Cluster Sampling, Quota Sampling Sampling errors and how to avoid them
UNIT - III : Preparation of Research Report General consideration Format of the thesis Quotations Footnotes and bibliographical references. Table and illustrations Matters of styles - abbreviations, capitalization, Punctuation, use of numbers etc.
UNIT - IV : Role of Statistics in Educational Research, Tabulation and Classification of Data, Coding and Categories Measures of Central Tendencies and Variability, Their reliability and their significances Mean, Median and Mode Range, Inter quartile range, Mean, Deviation and Standard Deviation Test of Significance of difference between Means (t-test) Normal Probability Curve : Use of Normal Probability Curve, Skewness and Kurtosis Diagrammatic Representation of Data, Histograms, Frequency Polygons and Cumulative Frequency Curves.
UNIT - V : Coefficient of correlation - rank difference and product moment methods Association of Attributes - Yule's Coefficient, Phi-coefficient and chi-square test Analysis and Variance
SESSIONAL WORK : 1. Preparation of Research, Design of problem other than the one selected for the candidates, dissertation 2. Review of a completed Research at the Ph.D. or M.Ed. Level.
